University of Birmingham Dubai Welcomes Expo 2020 Intern

Following a unique competition that attracted hundreds of applicants from across its sister campus in the UK, the University of Birmingham Dubai has welcomed its first-ever Expo 2020 intern.

Beatrice Gironi, a second-year Business Management student, was selected for the social media marketing internship after being chosen from over 200 applicants.

Beatrice, an Italian native, will spend three weeks in Dubai for Expo 2020, visiting a variety of pavilions to develop material for the University of Birmingham Dubai marketing team to share on social media.

She will create digital content on linkages between the campuses in Birmingham and Dubai, as well as the skills needed to work in a global marketplace when she arrives in time for Expo 2020’s Travel and Connectivity theme week. She’ll also keep a video diary of her journey.

“Going to Dubai is a dream come true for me, and I’m looking forward to working at Expo 2020 and learning more about Dubai culture,” Beatrice said. This opportunity to collaborate with the University team and learn more about digital marketing excites me much.

“Studying at the University of Birmingham was a fantastic experience; they provided me with a fantastic education that I would not have had access to in Italy, as well as the opportunity to enhance my English.” The opportunity to win an internship in Dubai as a result of this competition was an added plus!”

The OfS/Research England Student Knowledge Exchange Project, which helps students at the Universities of Birmingham and Keele find internships, consultancies, enterprise challenges, boot camps, and start their own business, is funding Beatrice’s internship.

The Careers Network team at the University of Birmingham collaborated with colleagues in Dubai to organize the competition, which featured 30 students, including Beatrice. After that, participants attended a social media training and were given an hour to develop a short film for social media advertising Expo 2020 attendance.

The judging team chose Beatrice’s video along with three others, and the finalists were invited to an in-person interview with Careers Network officials, after which she was chosen for the Dubai internship.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Beatrice to the University of Birmingham Dubai,” said Provost Professor David Sadler. “I believe that working with our marketing team will provide her with an intriguing and gratifying opportunity.”

“Everything we do is aimed at expanding the breadth of extraordinary opportunities available to students in Dubai.” We’re excited to share such experiences with Birmingham students, especially as we prepare to open our brand-new, bespoke campus building – a new academic home that will provide an educational experience unlike any other in Dubai.”

The University of Birmingham Dubai, the first worldwide top 100 and elite UK Russell Group university to open a campus in Dubai, provides the highest-quality education supported by a growing research focus in a major global educational hub.

The University of Birmingham Dubai’s new campus, which opened this month and encourages students to conduct research in multidisciplinary teams across all academic topics, is designed to replicate real-world working methods. Whether in big lecture halls and laboratories or smaller seminar and tutorial rooms, students enjoy a learning environment that is tailored to their needs.

The Dubai facilities use shaded open-air courtyard spaces to create an enjoyable and productive student environment, with architecture influenced by the historic Aston Webb buildings at the heart of the Birmingham campus. The buildings are adjacent to parkland, which includes sports fields and open-air event space, and new student housing is just across the parkland.
